7/4/2023 0 Comments Abbott's flatlandCredulity must be replaced with credibility. Abbott argued that if the supernatural were to impose itself on the natural world, it could only do so without violating natural laws. For Abbott, like his idol Francis Bacon, all knowledge comes from logic and personal experience, whether it’s physical or spiritual. One particular battle in the 1840s revolved around the Catholic Church’s call to “credulity,” a faith-based (and therefore not scientific) acceptance of the improvable and unlikely. But does the novel merely offer a “romantic fantasy” of an alternate world, teach geometry, promote women’s rights, or mock the pettiness of society–or does it also allude to theological ascent? Since Abbott spent much of his life defending Christianity against irrationality and superstition, the clues may be altogether too clear. Abbott’s novel premiered in the England of the 1880s, an unsuitably proper Victorian atmosphere but perfect for his didactic approach. 7/4/2023 0 Comments Mercy jackie phamotseHe explained his decision to have the country singer – who apologised last July after using racist language – and the. One reason “The Shining” continues to hold power over audiences is that it rewards multiple viewings, says artist and set designer Patti Podesta. This year alone has seen several examples of its persistent hold on the imagination including the release of “ Room 237,” a documentary exploring claims by a variety of theorists that Kubrick deliberately inserted coded symbols and meanings into his film a major exhibit on Kubrick at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art featuring a unique gallery devoted to “The Shining” and the public display of an elaborate recreation of “The Shining” by sculptor Howard Senft. Kubrick’s adaptation of “The Shining” (which King reportedly never liked) continues to fascinate – and terrify – viewers more than three decades after it first hit theaters. Our sources in Hollywood say the studio is in the very early stages of developing a possible sequel to the film. owns the movie rights to the sequel, just as it did the original film directed by the late Stanley Kubrick. “Doctor Sleep” picks up with Danny, the clairvoyant boy at the center of “The Shining,” as a middle-aged man still in possession of his disturbing psychic powers. The 1980 cult-classic film “The Shining” could very well get a sequel now that Stephen King has published his long-awaited followup to the 1977 novel. 7/4/2023 0 Comments Robert a heinlein red planetThis works extremely well for young adult novels, and Red Planet comes off wonderful in this format, making each character dramatically stand out. Full cast audio means each character gets their own actor performing the lines. Red Planet just came out on unabridged audio from Full Cast Audio, a company that publishes audio books for young people. In the last decade I’ve been listening to audio book editions of his books. I still love rereading Heinlein, and usually reread a few of his novels every year. After The Moon is a Harsh Mistress Heinlein (1966), Heinlein never wrote another book I liked. Somehow my literary hero wrote a clinker, at least in my eyes. From 1964 through 1966 I read Heinlein’s backlog of books, some several times, so after a four year dry spell of no new books I was mentally demolished when in 1970 I read I Will Fear No Evil and hated it. Heinlein novel I discovered back in 1964, and with the first reading of that book I turned into a life-long fan of Heinlein’s work. 7/4/2023 0 Comments Gone book lisa mcmannThey find Carrie in the ICU waiting room. Her boyfriend, Cabel, whisks her away to a lakeside cabin his brother and sister-in-law have rented so she can find peace. Eighteen–year-old Janie Hannagan needs a break from the pressure of her newfound celebrity status as the girl who helped break up a sex ring at her high school. 7/4/2023 0 Comments The rise of endymionThis is a series of immense ideas and mind-bending scope. If you are a fan of science fiction, this series has it all: time travel, space battles, realistic physics and limitations in space travel, artificial intelligence, and, yes, a sweeping romance. Though the Cantos is most definitely a polemic against organized religion, and Roman Catholicism in particular, Simmons shows a surprising gentleness to the church in the series' resolution, and allows the reader to draw their own conclusions about whether the church saved its own soul or not. This is epic sci fi at its very best: imagining an all-too plausible future universe where people struggle with age-old conundrums and ever-evolving moral responsibilities, shadowed by the persistent anxiety of man versus his machines. But this is a good thing, as it heightens the mystery of his universe and spurs the reader to imagine what will happen next after the final paragraph. There are resolutions, big reveals, and shocking twists a-plenty, but Simmons still leaves a some things in the shadows, only partly explained. This is the crowning finale to Dan Simmons' sprawling Hyperion Cantos. 7/3/2023 0 Comments A soul to keep duskwalkerShe?s not afraid of him, and his insatiable desire deepens within every moment of her presence. Sydney tutors the stranger in the ways of civilization, while he begins to teach her about love. In the lost man, Sydney sees an intelligence and wit the academics studying him can't fathom. The more she gets to know him, the more she aches for the sensitive, insightful man locked inside his wild shell. And then she sees the disheveled stranger staring at her from the window of his small cottage. She's back where she was before her marriage, taking care of her father, the absent-minded anthropologist, and seeing after her two younger brothers. But instead of healing, Sydney finds herself stifled by the very prim and proper life she's forced back into. Wounded by the death of her young husband, Sydney Darrow has returned to her family's summer home in Michigan. The words they speak, like his old name, are a long-forgotten part of his past. Inside, he yearns for the freedom of the forest, for his friends the wolves, but at the same time, he aches for the touch and companionship he sees the people around him expressing. Confused and alone, the lost man paces his cell, the small room where the people have locked him so they can study the ways of the boy who was raised by wolves. |
